Reflecting on 2023

Hi folks,

First order of business: happy new year! I hope you enjoyed a restful winter vacation, and for those of you who kept working through the holidays – all I can say is, I was right there with you. As we get a roll on 2024, I wanted to reflect on some things that happened for Nick, myself, and Nodality Music in the last year.

As you may recall, we started releasing our first set of videos made in collaboration with Guarneri Hall last summer. They are now all out, including Nick’s entire Oracle, and can be viewed on our Media Page! Very soon we’ll be releasing the next set of recordings centered around Ira Mowitz’s Suite for Solo Cello – a true tour de force showing everything the cello has to offer. Look out for a forthcoming announcement!

Last semester at Curtis, I had the privilege of continuing Nodality’s Music & Climate Education initiative as I taught an undergraduate course on Music, Social Entrepreneurship, and Climate Justice. Working with Mary Javian and Dr. Eva Swidler, we explored a variety of environmental themes as well as how social justice and music can intersect. It all culminated in interactive performances at Philly House and the High School for Creative and Performing Arts.

In other Curtis related news, our own Nick DiBerardino was appointed Dean of the Curtis Institute of Music! It seems like every year brings exciting developments for his tenure at Curtis – and there may be yet another one coming pretty soon…

The last bit of 2023 news I’ll share is that Nodality Music was awarded a grant from the Curtis Alumni Fund for our climate commissioning initiative! We’re incredibly grateful for this support and look forward to taking this long-term project that’s so close to our hearts into new territory as we bring a diverse new set of composers into the mix!

I can’t wait to see what 2024 holds for all of us, and I especially look forward to reconnecting with all of you soon.

All the best,
Zach
