Suite Talk
Connecting classical music to broader culture through interactive concerts, videos, and more
Suite Talk tells human stories that animate contemporary classical music. Listeners hear from the artists directly in interviews and performance demonstrations, allowing inside access to deeply personal details about the conception, creation, and execution of the music. At the same time, Suite Talk listeners learn about core musical concepts, encouraging new curiosity and familiarity with the genre. Suite Talk enhances the connections between artist and listener, deepening the listening experience and illuminating ties between music and the world at large.
The interactive nature of Suite Talk events invite participants to dance, and clap along, and make the music relatable. The dialogue promotes an exploration of the deeply human elements that go into all music-making: the cultural and historical touchstones that inspire each composer, the physical efforts of the performer, and most of all, the personal connections between audiences and musicians’ lives and their work.
Each event features a program specifically curated to demystify new works for solo cello such as Nick’s own Oracle for solo cello, and the Suite for Solo Cello by Ira J. Mowitz, Zach’s father.
In Suite Talk events, participants explore things like counterpoint and dance forms through audience participation, Q&A, and guided hearings of excerpts from the cello’s history by composers such as Bach, Gabrielli, Britten, and Saariaho. Listeners are invited to talk, dance, and clap along, clarifying musical concepts in their own bodies.
Expanding the impact of new music, beyond the concert hall
Suite Talk dissolves the barriers in traditional concert halls by meeting audiences where they are. We present Suite Talk in non-conventional settings with a more relaxed atmosphere, and the nature of the presentations promote dialogue.
In 2019, we brought Suite Talk to coffee houses, yoga studios, libraries, and other community meeting places throughout Philadelphia. Other events have included presentations for Penn Memory Center patients, Indianapolis’ Chatterbox Jazz Club, and the Colorado Music Festival. PBS WHYY featured “Suite Talk” in a documentary that same year.
